Special Needs School in Kiribati
Eria is a 14-year old boy who was born blind. He has been bullied a lot, and because there was no school for him he had to stay at home. Compared to his peers he has a tremendous learning disadvantage. But since two years Eria now attends the Kiribati School and Centre for Children with Special Needs. He has gained self-confidence and is a very good student.
This only school for children with special needs in Kiribati is in Bikenibeu and was founded in 1991 by the Kiribati Red Cross. It is supported by Australia, the the government, Jar of Coins and by us.
The 140 students are collected by bus from all over South Tarawa.
Some students are blind and/or deaf, many have other limitations, and there are adults too. Some teachers have had a specialist training.
There is a parents committee which takes important decisions.
Recently the school opened a real Mwaneaba, a communal room partly funded by Jar of Coins.
Meals for the students
A proper meal at school is for many parents a good reason to send their children to school. A donation of € 25.00 buys one child a wholesome lunch for three month and you enable a child to get an education.
